| Difference between Grant and Lee | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
Lee fought for his homeland in the south while Grant did not feel strongly for the north. Lee's men believe in him and the north feared him, while the south did not fear Grant and the north did not believe in him. Lee took little supplies and made his army into a great machine while Grant took a lot and struggled with it. Grant was known as unconditional surrender grant, or USS Grant, united states grant, etc. Lee was known as a man of the south, a man of the people.

Lee was a very strategic general. Since his army was smaller, he could not afford many casualties. His supplies were low and his men were for the most part always hungry. Therefor, he relied on quick movement, lightning attacks, and pure innovation. Grant on the other hand was a bulldog. He threw in all his troops into a fray. He did not care how many he lost because he knew he had so many. Take for instance the battle of the Wilderness. Grant lost that battle to Lee. yet despite his large amounts of casualties, he did not retreat. He just pushed on. For such tactics, the men of Grants army called him, "the butcher" Lee was very innovative. He broke the rules of standardized strategy in order to come out on top. At the battle of Chancellorsville, Lee's army was grossly outnumbered. The one thing you never do when your army is outnumbered is split your forces. That is exactly what Lee did. He sent "Stonewall" Jackson off to attack the Flank of the Union line. The Union was, to say the least, very shocked. Lee's plan ended up working. Jackson's men marched all night, never stopping, all the way around the union flank and attacked. it was brilliant. Lee always could predict his opponents move. It was almost a 6th sense for him. The only time he ever really failed at prediction was at Gettysburg. But other than that, Lee always knew his opponents next move. Grant would never give up. It took Grant about an entire year to take Vicksburg. He was met with defeat on numerous occassions, but he understood he could never give up. He was ruthless. In fact, his tactics are credited by some as an early form of the Blitzkrieg, the NAZI tactic used to defeat France in WWII. He, unlike Lee, was not compassionate. He would never show weakness. After an assault on Vicksburg, an assault that lost, Grants dead were lying all over the field. They're bodies began to expand and explode due to the heat. It was disgusting. General Pemberton, the Confederate General, wrote to grant and urged a temporary truce to pick up the dead. Grant refused, because he didn't want to appear weak. That is the kind of commander Grant was. Grant was never hesitant on bringing war to the civilians. he didn't care if his troops burned down southern homes. He felt it was necessary in order to break the rebel morale. General Sherman and Sheridan will even take this form of warfare, Total Warfare, to the next step in their Georgia and Shennandoah campaigns respectavley. Lee would never bring the war to the civilians. He was very compassionate.
